Michigan football recruiting has been in pursuit of Bryce Underwood for quite some time now, and for good reason. Underwood, a Michigan native and five-star quarterback in the 2025 recruiting class, is one of the most sought-after in-state prospects, perhaps ever. He currently ranks as the No. 1 recruit in the nation (according to On3 industry and 247 Sports composite). At the moment, it appears that a major SEC program is also showing a lot of interest in him.

Last weekend, five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood, the No. 1 recruit in the nation, made his way to Ann Arbor for the Wolverines’ BBQ at the Big House event. However, in the days leading up to this massive recruiting event for the Maize and Blue, Underwood was deep in the heart of SEC country with the LSU Tigers, who have been gaining tons of momentum in his recruitment as of late.

For the time being, it still seems like Michigan football is the team to beat in the race for Underwood. The Wolverines have the best odds in the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, and considering that Michigan is already home to the No. 1 recruit in the nation, there is a lot of momentum on Michigan’s side here.

That said, if Bryce Underwood is considering leaving his home state, it looks like the LSU Tigers are currently the out-of-state option he is most fond of. The Tigers have slowly moved up in the RPM as of late, and while Michigan football still leads in visits (10), LSU has gotten Underwood on campus three times since March.

According to all reports and early signs, it seems like Michigan football recruiting still has an edge when it comes to the No. 1 recruit in the nation, Bryce Underwood. However, a major SEC program is looming, and it could quickly turn into a dogfight as Underwood’s commitment date (January 6th, 2024) approaches. For now, keep a close eye on what Brian Kelly is doing down south, because it appears that LSU is Michigan’s top competition here.
